HEALTH & SAFETY

We take health and safety very seriously which is essential when deep water and strongly flowing river

are involved  We ask all members to be constantly on the alert for potential hazards and risks and to

report to the committee and executive any misgivings. The names and contact details of the Secretary

and Chairman are on the Home page.

Risks and hazards are part of life and most of them are so well known that we do not notice them or

even appreciate their existence. Angling brings its own risks and hazards, some of which are not

encountered in day to day living, so a risk assessment has been undertaken for each venue

separately.

These may be accessed by clicking on the name below which should cause a document file name

to appear.at the bottom of the screen.

BANK CLEARING

Bank clearing should only take place using the guidance of the River Work Management System in conjunction with the Health and Safety Risk assessment for relevant location

 RIVER WORK MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

The following is a code of good practice and conduct with the object of preventing accidents on IWAS waters.  Individuals at all times must work in a safe manner both to prevent injury to themselves or others.

Whilst the light clearance of vegetation with hand tools to facilitate fishing pegs is thought to be acceptable, heavier works are to be agreed and only undertaken by organised working parties.

All fixed open blades to be protected for transport with sheaths and/or toolbox or tool bag storage.

All cutting blades to be secured during use to prevent hazards or unauthorised use.

Unaccompanied working is always to be avoided.

Experienced and Certified operatives only to use chain saws and other such power tools.

Emergency first aid kit to be on hand.

In prior preparation and on arrival to site individuals to consider the need for safety equipment - hi visibility jackets; safety trousers and footwear; gloves; eye and ear protection; and hard hat, all as necessary.

Instigate activities, appraising ground conditions as work progresses and observing all provisions of the published Health and Safety Risk Assessment for the relevant venue.

Take particular care to avoid trip hazards.  Maintain awareness of surroundings including proximity of others and vehicle movements.  Check at each location that others are outside the zone of flying debris or swing of tool reach.  Only clear the minimum vegetation required.  Preferentially select loppers and hand saws for any task over bladed or power tools where these are equally suited to a task.

At all stages check for the presence of nesting birds and other wildlife and be mindful of the special environmental status of the River Teme.

During work on site ensure that weather and water level conditions are continuously monitored and appropriate responses taken.

On completion of physical activities remove protective gear when safe to do so.  Wash hands and equipment as appropriate to ensure possible contaminants are removed.
